Week Seventeen

* Report card assessments will begin tomorrow (Thursday, January 12th) which means I will not be doing reading groups for the next few weeks until all assessments are complete.

* Chapter 5 math tests are coming home in Friday folders. This chapter focused on addition and different number pairs for #5-10. One of the report card standards is to be able to 'fluently add to 5'. We will be doing a five minute timed test sometime next week where everyone will have 5 minutes to solve 16 addition problems. (I don't tell them it's timed, so keep that a secret). The term 'fluently adds' in kindergarten simply means they can solve addition problems within a given amount of time. By no means does it mean your child needs to have addition facts memorized at this point.

* We have also started Chapter 6 which focuses on subtraction. We are using red and yellow counters to solve subtraction problems and are learning how to write subtraction number sentences.

* On Monday, January 16th, we will be doing several activities to celebrate MLK day. We will start the day with an all- school assembly, then at 11:00 we will have an all-school silent march, and then we'll end the day with a performance by Bright Star Theatre which will be about Jackie Robinson.

* Michigan Munchies starts this week Friday. The fourth graders are raising money for their Mackinaw Island trip at the end of the year by selling popcorn at lunch for $.50 every Friday.

* Mark your calendars! On Monday, January 23rd the PTO will be hosting a Family Fun Night at Airtime Trampoline and Game Park from 4-7pm. Admission is free for all Lakeside families. Hopefully you can join in on the fun!

* Just a reminder that there will be no school on Friday, January 27th due to report cards. Report cards will be available thru Skyward beginning at 8:00 am on Friday, February 3rd.
