Week Thirteen/Fourteen

* We had our third Kidz Have Rights lesson on Friday and an activity page was sent home in Friday folders. Please take a look at the back of the worksheet and complete the discussion with your child.

*We are collecting money donations for our crossing guard, Howard. He is always so appreciative of the support he receives from our Lakeside Lions families. If you have a a few dollars to spare, please send it to school and we'll make sure it gets down to the collection envelop in the office.

* The Scholastic Book Fair has begun and is set up in the Learning Commons. It will be open during lunch all week as well as after school until 4:00 Monday-Thursday. It will also be open from 6-7 on Wednesday during Bedtime Stories. We will be going down to the book fair as a class on Tuesday so everyone can make a wish list (we will not be purchasing books at this time). I always encourage kindergarteners to shop with their parents either at lunch or after school. Please do not send money to school with your child and hope that they will be able to pick out and purchase books on their own. I would hate for them to come home with $10 worth of fun erasers and stickers rather than the nice new book you were planning on them purchasing = )


What we are learning about in school...

* Literacy: We continue to work on short vowel sounds as well as blends that we hear at the beginning of a word. We learned a new sound chunk this week: -ay which says a. We wrote and read words that end in -ay (day, way, play, say, etc.) and are beginning to identify this chunk in words within a text.

*Writer's Workshop: Your child recently had a vowel chart added to their writing folder. They have learned that every word needs at least one vowel and are learning how to check their work to make sure every word indeed has a vowel. We will be finishing up our narrative unit next week and will start how-to writing when we return in January.

*Math: We will be finishing our addition unit next week. What I like about this unit is that it's teaching everyone more than just simple addition problems, but it's also getting them to think about missing addends (i.e. 2+ ___= 5) We are also learning about different number pairs that make numbers 5-10. We use a lot of manipulatives and games to help with these concepts.

*Science: We are wrapping up our unit on forces and motion and will begin learning about our five senses next week.
