Report Cards

Report cards will be available for viewing on January 24th. You will need to access your skyward account to see your child's grades. A paper copy of the report card WILL NOT be sent home. Please let me know if you have any questions once you have reviewed your child's report.

In the language arts section you will notice a number grade in the reading section.
The reading process is developmental.  Your child exhibits independent reading behaviors of the stage indicated by a '1'.  It is our goal for Kindergarten children to master the 'emergent' stage and move into the 'transitional' stage of reading by the end of the year. The stages on the reading continuum are as follows:
pre-emergent, emergent, transitional, beginner, independent. 


Here is a description of each reading level:

Pre-Emergent Reader: holds book and correctly turns page, chooses books and has favorites, shows start and end of book, listens and responds to literature, knows some letter names, interested in environment, pretends to read

Emergent Reader: Beginning to read, uses illustrations to tell a story, participates in reading of familiar books, knows some letter sounds, recognizes names / words in context, memorizes pattern books and familiar books, rhymes and plays with words

Transitional Reader: sees self as reader, reads books with word patterns, knows most letter sounds, retells main idea of text, recognizes simple high frequency words in context, relies on print and illustrations

Beginning Reader: reads early reader books, relies on print more than illustrations, uses meaning cues, uses sentence structure clues, uses phonetic clues, beginning to integrate meaning, retells beginning/middle/end

Independent Reader: reads beginning chapter books, reads and finishes a variety of materials with frequent guidance, uses reading strategies appropriately, retells plot/characters/events, recognizes different types of books
